Intolerable: Trump’s Shocking, Clearly Impeachable Abuse of Power
Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen
The nation cannot tolerate a president who does not respect the foundational principles of our constitutional democracy.
President Donald Trump’s abuse of power, corruption and disdain for constitutional values has been evident since he first took office.
With the latest revelations that Trump urged Ukraine to conduct an investigation into a political opponent and likely threatened to withhold hundreds of millions in aid unless Ukraine capitulated to his demand, our nation has reached a tipping point. Trump has evidenced a contempt for constitutional norms so severe that the U.S. House of Representatives has no choice but to undertake impeachment proceedings.
Public Citizen applauds Speaker Nancy Pelosi for deciding to advance an impeachment inquiry in light of the new revelations. The American people deserve to learn the full story of what Trump did in regards to Ukraine – a story that will require learning what the whistleblower has reported – but what Trump himself has admitted doing is a shocking and clearly impeachable abuse of power.
