Trump Won’t Crack Down on Prescription Price Gouging Because Pharma Pays Pro-Trump Groups
Statement of Peter Maybarduk, Director of Public Citizen’s Global Access to Medicines Program
Note: Published reports indicate that Big Pharma has donated at least $4 million to pro-Trump dark money groups in the last year.
Big Pharma’s $2.5 million mega-gift to the notorious, dark money group America First gives the lie to the already far-fetched notion that President Donald Trump means to crack down on pharma price gouging. While Trump likes to play tough on TV, the money trail shows us that Big Pharma monopolists are happy to bet that they have a friend in the White House. The Trump administration, and its small maneuvers on drug pricing, ultimately aim to protect Big Pharma from public outrage and calls for greater changes to its abusive, monopolistic business model.
