Trump Fights Clean Car Standards Instead of the Coronavirus
Statement of Amit Narang, Regulatory Policy Advocate, Public Citizen
It’s outrageous that the Trump administration decided to finalize its rollback of the clean car standards instead of focusing all its efforts on fighting COVID-19. Yet, it’s hardly surprising that the administration rushed this rollback while the public wasn’t looking.
According to numerous reports, analysis of the rollback from both the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency shows that it would cost consumers more at the pump, lead to increased carbon emissions that will speed up climate change and provide virtually no safety benefits in terms of lives saved on the road compared to the increased deaths it will lead to as a result of more air pollution.
Congress must immediately demand that all pending rulemakings be suspended unless they are directly related to the coronavirus. The Trump administration’s attempts to finalize other regulatory rollbacks that threaten consumers, workers, families and our environment must be stopped.
