Toyota Shows No Progress on Modest Sustainability Goals
Days after calling for weakened emissions standards, Toyota releases sustainability report
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Toyota Motor Corp. today released the company’s 2024 North American Environmental Sustainability Report. The report comes days after Toyota’s North American chief operating officer criticized U.S. policies intended to cut greenhouse gasses and other emissions limits. In response, Adam Zuckerman, senior clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:
“Toyota admitted it is failing its embarrassingly modest goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 15% from 2018 to 2026. In fact, it is polluting more than it was three years ago.
“It is no surprise, given that the company is dead last on building electric vehicles. Toyota has spent the last decade building gasoline-powered cars and lobbying against climate action. Toyota blames the availability of technology, but that has not stopped its competitors. Toyota has no one to blame but itself.
“A vast majority of emissions come from its dirty supply chain, yet the only plan Toyota put forward to decrease those emissions is to collect more data from suppliers. Toyota needs to commit to decarbonizing its supply chain and building more EVs.”
