The Criminal Conspiracy Extends Far Beyond January 6
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the conclusion of the fourth U.S. House January 6 Select Committee hearing today, Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president of Public Citizen and co-chair of the Not Above the Law Coalition, released the following statement:
“The criminal conspiracy by former President Donald Trump and his allies extends far beyond January 6, with new details emerging about how they pressured state officials to overturn an election they knew they’d lost. Trump, his top aides, and multiple Republicans in Congress plotted for months to overturn the election with a coordinated strategy laid out in memos, briefings, powerpoints, and secret messages.
“Long before January 6, attempts were underway to illegally steal our votes. Former Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and others were threatened for simply upholding the integrity of Georgia’s elections. And Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers was pressured to pick a new slate of electors after it was clear Trump lost the state.
“Long after January 6, the efforts to sabotage elections across the country are still underway. State legislatures around the nation have introduced more than 200 bills in the past year to interfere with elections on a partisan basis, following Trump’s lead. Republicans are threatening election administrators who won’t go along with them and are running candidates for election administrative offices from secretaries of state to county clerks who still want to overturn the 2020 election.
“These acute and ongoing threats to our elections from Trump and his MAGA allies must be addressed, starting with accountability at the highest levels for the illegal scheme to overturn the 2020 presidential election.”
