FTC Bans Junk Fees for Hotel Bookings and Event Tickets
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a bipartisan rule banning junk fees in hotel bookings and event tickets, in a move that protects consumers from deceptive pricing in these industries. “The Junk Fees Rule will ensure that pricing information is presented in a timely, transparent, and truthful way to consumers of live-event tickets and short-term lodging,” said the FTC in its announcement.
In response, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“For far too long, everyday Americans have been forced to put up with mysterious fees, extra charges and unexpected costs when booking hotels or buying event tickets. These deceptive tactics harm consumers and businesses who choose to be honest with their customers. We deserve better, and we’re glad to see the FTC is taking action to put an end to these practices.
“With their new junk fees rule, the FTC will put an end to bait-and-switch pricing on live events and lodging, ensuring that consumers receive transparent information to avoid surprise add-on costs. Public Citizen applauds the FTC and Chair Lina Khan for this important action to protect regular Americans.”
