AIG’s Annual ESG Report Falls Short on Divestment from Fossil Fuels
WASHINGTON, D.C. — American International Group Inc. (AIG) released its 2022 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) report yesterday, detailing a lack of progress toward transitioning away from fossil fuels. In response, Kerrina Williams, climate campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:
“The impacts of climate change pose an existential risk to AIG’s long term business, yet its 2022 ESG report fails to demonstrate adequate progress toward stemming these risks. AIG is aware of climate-related threats to its business, but the insurance giant fails to see that its continued support of fossil fuels actively fuels those threats. AIG continues to insure and finance fossil fuel projects while abandoning consumers impacted by the climate disasters made worse by fossil fuels.”
“This report failed to share any substantial plans to end AIG’s support for fossil fuels. Instead, it’s littered with buzzwords aimed at greenwashing AIG’s lack of meaningful movement on its 2022 climate policy. Now is the time for transparency and real climate leadership. AIG must immediately end all underwriting and insurance for fossil fuel expansion.”
