A Temporary Funding Lapse Would Have Been Better Than a Devastating Long-Term CR

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Senate today passed the House GOP’s long-term continuing resolution (CR). All four amendments were voted down. The Senate also voted to restore funding to the District of Columbia. Robert Weissman and Lisa Gilbert, co-presidents of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“The CR is a harmful, partisan slush-fund bill for Trump and Musk. Public Citizen fought this bill tooth and nail, and we are incredibly disappointed at the refusal of Leader Schumer and Senate Democrats to hold the line and oppose the bill.

“The GOP’s long-term CR is not the clean continuation of previous funding commitments that we need. Instead, it enables Trump and Musk to claim much greater authority to violate the separation of powers and refuse to spend appropriated funds. In fact, Vice President Vance has made clear that the administration intends to do this.

“The Senate thankfully voted to cancel the draconian spending cuts on Washington, D.C. which would have caused pointless, devastating harm on children in the nation’s capital. We speak as D.C. residents with children in these schools as well as co-presidents of an institution representing impacted Americans across the country. The House should return immediately to ensure the District’s funding is restored.

“While no one wanted a shutdown, a temporary lapse in funding in fact would have been better than a devastating CR. This bill is a disgrace.”
