100,000+ Americans Call on Biden To Protect Our Rights Before Trump Takes Office
Public Citizen, ACLU, MoveOn, and CAP Action Lead Call for Biden Action Ahead of Second Trump Term
WASHINGTON, D.C. — More than 100,000 Americans have signed a petition calling on President Biden to act before the end of his term to safeguard basic rights in America ahead of Donald Trump’s return to power.
The call for action, led by civil society and advocacy organizations like MoveOn, Public Citizen, the ACLU, and the Center for American Progress Action, urges President Biden to take executive action to protect vulnerable communities and voting rights.
Speaking to the petition, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen stated: “Trump posed an extreme threat to the freedoms and rights of Americans during his first term in office, and there is every reason to expect that he will do so again when he returns to power. This is a critical time to act to protect the most vulnerable Americans among us and safeguard our democracy. We urge President Biden to do everything in his power in advance of Trump’s return to office.”
“Before Trump takes office, President Biden has the responsibility to use every tool at his disposal to safeguard our freedoms to vote, speak, and assemble,” said MoveOn Political Action executive director Rahna Epting. She went on to add: “On day one, we know Trump and his incoming administration will attempt to unravel our rights and target our most vulnerable communities. We’re calling on President Biden to prioritize swift and decisive actions that will protect our neighbors and the institutions that improve our daily lives.”
Ben Olinsky, senior vice president of structural reform & governance at the Center for American Progress Action Fund, also commented on the matter: “President Biden has been a fierce champion of our nation’s rule of law his entire career, and we need him now more than ever to safeguard its long-term health. He needs to run through the tape and take bold executive actions that will lock in the important policy progress he has made and safeguard long-cherished rights and freedoms from attacks by the coming Trump administration.”
“President Biden and his administration are in office for another eight weeks — we are counting on them to use that time to shore up our rights and freedoms,” said Mike Zamore, national policy & government affairs director at the ACLU, adding: “The ACLU, alongside tens of thousands of Americans across the country are calling on him to commute death sentences to life without parole, put up roadblocks to protect children and families from mass deportations, and protect us from the government spying on our health care choices. His administration has the tools to take these actions before he leaves office and must use them.”
