Webinar: Corporate Trade-Rigging Weakens Response to the COVID-19 Crisis
On Monday, April 6, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) joined Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch Director Lori Wallach for a live webinar to discuss how the COVID-19 crisis has exposed how bad trade deals have devastated our domestic manufacturing capacity.
Critical goods – including face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) – are only being produced in one or two locations, and trade pact patent rules mean that even as we face a global pandemic, countries that could make more medicines, ventilators and the like would be subject to trade sanctions for doing so without approval and payment of licensing terms.
Rep. Dingell and Wallach discussed how countries need to have the capacity to ensure their people have access to essential goods, as well as prioritize healthy, and resilient communities.
