Texas Gas Rush: Kerrville

The Kerrville Public Utility Board (KPUB) is planning to build a 124-megawatt natural gas-powered power plant outside of its service area in Colorado County. The cost of the plant is estimated to be around $150 million and has been accepted for a loan by the Texas Energy Fund. With this funding, the plant is projected to be producing electricity by early 2027.

The proposed plant will be a natural gas fired reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) plant, and because of its quick start time will serve as a standby unit providing Ancillary Services in the ERCOT market. KPUB hosted two Power Hour events on August 1st and 28th of 2024.

KPUB has a survey about the proposed plan and priorities for the utility’s electric generation in general that is open to all residents. It includes questions about preference for renewable energy or fossil fuels. If you live in the area or are a KPUB customer, we encourage you to take the survey now.
