Okay, admit it. You (probably) haven’t read the entire Mueller report. And you’re not alone; according to a CNN poll, only 3% of Americans have read the entire thing.
And that’s totally understandable—after all, it’s over 400 pages long. Even its full name—The Report On The Investigation Into Russian Interference In the 2016 Presidential Election—might feel daunting, and the language within can be dense because the information is presented with such care and precision. Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III and his team of prosecutors are lawyers, after all. No offense to the lawyers out there.
But the information contained within the report is of incredible importance to our country. It stands as the most in-depth summary that the United States government has produced about the Russian effort to interfere in the 2016 election on behalf of Donald Trump, and it chronicles a President and a White House intent on obstructing the investigation into that effort.
You may not have read the report, but it is crucial to understand its findings—first-hand, rather than through the filter of ratings-driven cable news or the misleading brief summary of Attorney General William Barr, who has chosen to act as an attorney for Donald Trump rather than AG, and put his loyalty to the president ahead of his loyalty to the Constitution and the rule of law.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to power through it alone. Public Citizen is partnering with local and national groups in our Trump Is Not Above the Law coalition and has launched the Mueller Book Club, designed to help increase awareness of the Mueller report’s findings.
You can get started right away. Tonight at 8 P.M. EST, House Judiciary Chairperson, U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler, will join the second meeting of the club, participating in a webinar along with other exciting guest speakers to discuss Volume I of the report, entitled Russian Contacts with the Trump Campaign. Along with getting to witness speakers dissect the report along with thousands of fellow Americans, you’ll be able to discuss the jaw-dropping details within in real time. And plenty of policy and legal experts will be on hand to help you digest the more confusing passages.
The weekly broadcasts will continue for each of the following three weeks, with the next entry being a discussion of part of the second volume of the report, Obstruction of Justice, on Tuesday, May 28th. Each entry will feature exciting guest speakers and lively discussion. View the entire reading schedule here.
But although the weekly broadcasts are an exciting opportunity to convene with fellow concerned citizens, you don’t have to wait for each new weekly installment to keep the conversation going. We urge you to start a local reading group of your own in your own group or community. Have get-togethers with your people and have a relaxed conversation or a spirited debate about the first-hand reading you’ve done.
Robert Mueller and his team did their part. They worked incredibly hard over nearly two full years to gather all of the facts. His findings regarding the president’s repeated efforts to obstruct the investigation are so damning that over 900 former federal prosecutors from across the ideological spectrum have signed onto an open letter stating that they believe President Trump would be indicted were it not for the Office of Legal Counsel’s policy that a sitting president cannot be indicted. In other words, if any other individual in the country did what Mueller’s report found the president did, they would be charged with multiple felonies for obstruction of justice. And Americans certainly deserve to see the full unredacted report.
Make sure to like and follow the Mueller Book Club on Facebook, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Sign up for the email list at MuellerBookClub.com to receive a weekly reading guide and information about a weekly online discussion as well as suggestions for engaging others in your community. Register for tonight’s webinar on Zoom, or watch it live on the Mueller Book Club’s Facebook page. Share the live stream with your network and encourage them to join a local book club or start their own. Feel free to poke and prod and annoy your friends and family until they get on board, because it’s just that important.
Trump and Barr are betting that the American people won’t read the report and they can skate free. Prove them wrong.
